- Macedonia is a country in the central Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe; it borders with Serbia and Kosovo to the north, Greece to the south, Albania to the west and Bulgaria to the east. It was part of Yugoslavia, from which it declared independence in 1991. The Republic of Macedonia is a parliamentary democracy, is member of the United Nations and candidate to join to the European Union.
