- Hong Kong is a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China. It borders with the city of Shenzhen. It consists of a small peninsula in the south of China and over 200 small islands. Hong Kong has a different political system from mainland China and has its own currency, Hong Kong dollar. From 1842 to the end of World War II Hong Kong was a colony of the British Empire; then under British control until 1997, when China resumed sovereignty.
