- The Republic of the Marshall Islands is an insular country in the Pacific Ocean, near the equator. They are part of the larger island group of Micronesia. Marshall Islands were part of the Spanish Empire until 1874, when they were sold to the German Empire, under which they stayed until the end of the First World War. During the Second World War they were conquered by the United States and ruled by them until 1979.
